Legend of The
Field of Screams
You probably know that the South Boise / Kuna area
has several prison facilities. What most people
don’t know is the lengthy and twisted past of a farm
and the prisoners who worked it….
The year was 1972. Wes VanSickle was the warden of a
prison farm along Mason Creek. Harvest season meant
extra work on the farm and VanSickle reluctantly
agreed to bring 73 year-old Indian Eve along with
the motley crew of prisoners sentenced to hard
labor. With sunken eyes and a frail frame, she would
provide meager help, at best. The red bus entered a
cornfield from the Mason Creek road through the
dimly lit morning. The radio crackled a simple 10-4
as warden VanSickle reported his location.
Uneasiness came across the bus as a moaning breeze
rustled the corn stalks and a sharp, thick smoke
filled the cab. VanSickle glanced in the mirror, his
heart sunk as eyes locked with Indian Eve. Then,
silence.
The state never recovered Warden VanSickle, Indian
Eve, or any of the other prisoners. In spite of
efforts to cover up the unexplainable, this is a
history that refuses to be quietly plowed under.
Every effort at productivity on the farm has been
countered by disaster-- the crops twist in unnatural
patterns, scarecrows take on a life of their own,
and those who work the ground, quietly leave it
behind as they shake in silent fear. No one knows
for sure, but it seems the events of that censored
day continue to scream out for all the world to
hear. They MUST be heard….
